Before You Send Us That AI Artwork Design: A Printer's Honest Guide

We love that clients are getting creative with AI. Genuinely. Some of the artwork landing in our inbox lately is stunning — full scenes, characters, custom illustrations that would've cost a fortune and weeks of back-and-forth with a designer a few years ago. Now it takes someone five minutes and a good prompt.
Here's the part nobody's telling you though: most of that gorgeous AI art isn't actually ready to print. Not because the art is bad — because AI doesn't know (or care) what a screen printer, a DTF press, an engraving machine or an embroidery digitiser actually needs to work with. It's built for screens, not for garments, tumblers or caps.
So this one's for our clients: what AI does brilliantly, what it quietly gets wrong every single time, and — because we'd rather you get it right the first time than wait an extra few days for us to fix it — how to prompt AI so it hands you something we can actually print.
The Do's
Let's give credit where it's due. AI is genuinely great for:
• Exploring a concept or mood before committing to a design
• Giving a designer (us included) a strong starting reference to refine
• One-off digital use — social posts, mock-ups, invites — where print specs don't apply
• Nailing a vibe or style quickly when you're not sure how to describe what you want
If you're using AI to figure out what you want before you order — brilliant. Keep doing that. The trouble starts when that same file gets sent straight to print without anyone checking it against what the method actually needs.
The Don'ts (a.k.a. what we fix every single day)
This is the part that matters. Every printing method has its own non-negotiables, and AI-generated art routinely misses all of them.
Screen Printing — Don't send full-colour, gradient-heavy art
Screen printing works in separated spot colours — each colour is its own screen, printed as a flat, solid layer. AI art is almost always full-colour raster with soft gradients and blended tones, because that's what looks good on a screen. There's no clean way to separate a gradient sky or a softly shaded face into 4 or 6 spot colours without a full redraw or a simplified colour version being built from scratch.
If your design has smooth colour blends or photographic shading, screen printing isn't going to reproduce it the way you're picturing it — it needs to be simplified first.
DTF Printing — Don't send low-resolution or web-sized files
This is the big one, and it's the one we see the most. AI tools typically export images sized and optimised for screens — think 72 DPI, sometimes smaller than a WhatsApp profile picture. DTF printing needs a minimum of 300 DPI at the actual print size. When we scale a small, low-res AI image up to fit an A4 transfer or a full front print, it doesn't just look 'a bit soft' — it turns visibly blurry and pixelated, because we're stretching pixels that were never there to begin with.
We had a recent example of exactly this: a client sent us a beautifully illustrated character design for a personalised apron — a woman in a sunhat holding a sunflower, warm autumn tones, lots of detail with a neon glow border. Stunning concept. But the file was small, low-DPI, and had a solid white background baked in. To make it print-ready we had to: remove the white background entirely (it wasn't transparent, it was part of the image), upscale the artwork without it turning to a blurry mess, removing the drop shadows around the edges of artwork, removing the neon border glow effect and we had to rebuild fine detail in the hair and petals that had degraded in the up scaling process. What should've been a quick print turned into a proper retouching job.
Engraving — Don't send raster art with soft shading
Engraving tools want vector art or high-contrast black and white line work — clean, crisp edges the machine can read and etch. AI generates raster, photo-style images with soft gradients and shading baked in. There's no shading channel in a laser engraver; it's reading edges and depth, not tone. Soft AI shading will need to be completely removed, along with all the small fine detailing, as generally laser engraving is used on very small artworks, on screen it looks fine, but when you scale it down to engrave on the product (roughly 4 x 5cm) the smaller fine details are completely lost.
Embroidery — Don't send fine detail or photographic shading
Embroidery has to be digitised into actual stitch paths — thread, not pixels. AI art often includes fine line work, gradients, and photo-level shading that simply can't be stitched at practical thread density. Try to embroider it as-is and you either blow the stitch count (and the cost) through the roof, or the final embroidery turns into a blob of thread. Embroidery needs bold, simplified shapes with clear colour blocks — the opposite of what AI naturally produces.
Across the board — the three repeat offenders
• DPI/resolution — exported for screens (72 DPI), not print (300 DPI minimum)
• Sizing — generated small, then stretched to fit the actual print area, losing quality in the process
• Backgrounds — solid white or black backgrounds baked into the image instead of a transparent background, which we then have to manually remove
• Glow or drop shadow effects — outer glow effects or drop shadows can create stunning visual effects onscreen, however translated to printing, this is very troublesome to work with, or simply just removed all together from the artwork

What "Print-Ready" Actually Looks Like
Print-ready doesn't mean perfect — it means the file matches what the method needs:
• 300 DPI or higher, at the actual size it'll be printed
• A transparent background (not white, not black, actually transparent), PNG file
• Colours simplified appropriately for the print method (Pantone colours for screen printing, solid colours for embroidery)
• Enough resolution in the original file that scaling up doesn't introduce blur or artefacts
The good news: this is exactly what we check for on every order before anything goes near a press, a machine, or a needle. If your file isn't quite there yet, we'll either fix it or flag it so there are no surprises.
How to Prompt AI So It Actually Prints Well
If you want to cut down on back-and-forth (and get your order back faster), here's what to ask AI for up front:
• Ask for the highest resolution the tool allows, and specify the pixel dimensions if you can (bigger is always safer than smaller)
• Ask for a transparent background explicitly — most AI tools can do this if you say so, but won't by default
• Ask for "flat colour" or "limited colour palette" if it's going onto a screen-printed or embroidered item — avoid requesting photorealistic shading or gradients
• Ask for "bold, simplified line work" if it's for engraving
• Generate the design bigger than you think you need — you can always scale down, but scaling up loses quality every time
Even with all of that, we still recommend sending us the file before you finalise your order. We'll check it against the printing method you've chosen and let you know exactly what (if anything) needs adjusting — no guessing, no surprises on turnaround.
The Bottom Line
AI is a brilliant creative tool. It's just not a print production tool — yet. The gap between "looks amazing on my phone" and "prints beautifully on a garment" is real, and closing it is what we do every day.
